People of Song stands for the collective conception, creation and implementation of musical theatre works by artists from Namibia and Germany.

25-Windhoek-Berlin-black-01.png

A six-person collective from the Theodosia Music and Art Centre (Namibia) and Momentbühne eV (Germany) is developing the musical theater piece People of Song. The six artists are united by their desire to contribute to new ways of collaborating between artists from Namibia and Germany and to raise public awareness of social issues through culture.

Content of the work

People of Song is set in the present day. The story revolves around a 16-year-old girl named Anirus, who stirs up repressed memories by asking her grandmother Ouma questions, but receives no answers from her. At the same time, Hermann, the son of a German businessman, sets off for Namibia to return an inherited artifact. As the plot progresses, we witness the coming together of an unusual family.

Music research

Our music research trip through northern Namibia was a profound and enriching experience. Over ten days, we traveled through the country with our entire creative team in two cars, immersing ourselves in the diverse cultures and traditions of the Herero, Damara, Kavango, and Wambo. Direct interaction with the local people allowed us to experience and understand their stories, customs, and perspectives firsthand.

We met a variety of talented artists, including singers, choirs, and dancers, who impressed us with their passion and cultural richness. Each encounter brought unexpected and intense experiences that had a lasting impact on our work , People of Song . Particularly impressive was the warmth and openness with which the people in the various villages welcomed us and allowed us to share in their lives. This trip was not only a source of inspiration but also a valuable opportunity to experience and appreciate Namibia's cultural diversity up close.
